Plot summary:

The story is set in the year 2022 where Sword Art Online, a Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG), is released for the Nerve Gear console. The Nerve Gear is a headgear that projects a virtual reality by stimulating the five senses of the user through the access from their brain. With this, players will have the luxury of experiencing the game and have full control with their in-game characters using their minds.

After SAO's closed beta, it was released to the public on November 6, 2022. Those who already bought the game and the console log in for the first time. They are enjoying several hours of playing the game and later on discovers that logging out from the game is restricted. To answer the question as to why not, the game developer for SAO, Kayaba Akihiko, tells them if they wish to exit from the game, they must reach the 100th floor of the tower and defeat the last boss. One thing that scared the players, however, was that if their avatars die in-game, their bodies in the real world will perish as well.

The story focuses on Kirito, a player who has known the basics and tricks of the game, who is determined to finish and beat the game. He befriends several people and unintentionally abandons some, but meeting and falling in love with Asuna is the best thing that has happened to him. As they continue struggling to finish the game for two years, they discover Kayaba's avatar and confronted him.

They were successful in defeating him but only Kirito and some of the remaining players have managed to free themselves from the game. Asuna and the others have still not awakened. As he returns to the real world, he finds information about Asuna's whereabouts in another VRMMORPG called Alfheim Online. He decides to play the game and aims to save Asuna and the other players with the help of his half-sister, Suguha.
